Causes of Hip Pain

Hip pain can develop from both activity and inactivity, often building up over time through everyday habits. Sitting for long periods, especially with crossed legs or poor posture, can place strain on the hips. On the other hand, repetitive movements such as walking, running, or standing for extended periods can also lead to irritation in the joint and surrounding muscles.

You might notice discomfort when getting up from sitting, walking up stairs, lying on one side, or after exercise. Tight muscles, particularly in the hips and thighs, can restrict movement, while weakness or imbalance in the surrounding muscles can place extra pressure on the joint. Previous injuries or changes in activity levels can also contribute.

Hip pain often begins as a dull ache or stiffness and can progress to sharper pain, reduced range of movement, or discomfort when walking, bending or resting.

Quick Relief Technique

If your hip feels tight or uncomfortable, gentle stretching and movement can help relieve tension and improve mobility.

  • Lie on your back with both knees bent
  • Place one ankle over the opposite knee
  • Gently pull the supporting leg towards your chest
  • Hold for 15 to 20 seconds, then switch sides
  • Keep your movements slow and within a comfortable range

Taking regular breaks from sitting and incorporating light movement throughout the day can also help reduce stiffness in the hips.
