Causes of Upper Back Pain

Upper back pain is often linked to posture and the way we hold ourselves throughout the day. Long hours spent sitting at a desk, leaning forward over a laptop, or looking down at a phone can place ongoing strain on the muscles between the shoulder blades.

You might notice it if you tend to round your shoulders, sit without proper back support, or feel tension building after a day at your desk or driving. Stress can also contribute, causing tightness across the upper back and shoulders that gradually builds into discomfort.

This type of pain often begins as a dull ache or stiffness and can develop into tight, restricted movement, discomfort when taking deep breaths, or a constant feeling of tension across the upper back.

Quick Relief Technique

If your upper back feels tight or stiff, gentle movement and posture awareness can help release tension.

  • Sit or stand tall with your chest open
  • Gently squeeze your shoulder blades together
  • Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 8 to 10 times
  • Slowly roll your shoulders backwards in a controlled motion
  • Take a few deep breaths, allowing your ribcage to expand fully

Taking regular breaks from sitting and adjusting your workspace setup can also help prevent tension from building.
