Why winter is a great time for self care

Self Care : during the winter months, cold and flu viruses become far more prevalent, our muscles tense up and joints can become stiff and uncomfortable. Stress and depression are also known to be higher during this time of year with many people suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), increased social isolation and stress from the festive period.

Winter, however, is a great time for self-care – and massage can be particularly beneficial in helping beat back the winter blues and strengthening your body’s natural defences against cold and flu season.

Here are a few reasons how regular massage can help get your through the winter months feeling your best:

  1. Relieve Muscle Tension: The drop in temperature in the winter months causes our muscles to contract and tighten in an effort to stay warm, leading to increased muscle tightness and tension. Massage can help release this tension, bringing immediate relief and improved flexibility
  2. Boost Immune System: Massage therapy can help strengthen your immune system by boosting the lymphatic system and reducing stress. Improved immune function and lowered stress levels will help make your body more resistant to all the winter viruses in circulation
  3. Fight Seasonal Depression: Reduced sunlight in the winter months can lead to seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Massage stimulates the release of endorphins, a hormone that combats feelings of sadness and stress, helping to improve your overall mood
  4. Improved Circulation: Colder weather can restrict blood flow, causing numbness and discomfort. Massage helps increase blood circulation, improving warmth, preventing cold-related issues and ensuring vital nutrients and oxygen get to where your body needs them most
  5. Soothe Dry Skin: Winter can lead to dry and itchy skin. Massage oils and lotions will help to hydrate your skin, leaving it softer, smoother and ready for the elements (and central heating!)

While massage can contribute to a stronger immune system, it is important that it is seen as part of an overall wellbeing approach that includes adequate hydration, a balanced and nutritious diet, exercise and good hygiene.

Book a massage today and give your immune system the boost it needs to fend off winter illnesses, keeping you healthy and happy all winter long.
